Exploration & Recreation
A LIFE ON THE LEFT Autumn and Winter 2015 Collection
April 2015, for immediate release
“Whatever is in the past is over. One day at a certain moment, we suddenly realized the surroundings that originally were familiar to us had been changed quietly day by day.”
As the pursuit of traditional crafts, A LIFE ON THE LEFT clings to the history and spirit behind the traditional crafts, which leads to another setting-out and tracing and then brings you 2015 Autumn and Winter Collection-- Exploration & Recreation. The word Exploration represents the act of seeking the past, the future and oneself. All people keep exploration during their lifetime. While Recreation refers to the process of understanding oneself, the history and the past once again by exploration. This collection will give people deeper thoughts about the hidden meanings and essences from people and things. Exploration, represents not only the change of oneself but also the process of its recreation. Recreation, represents not only the rebirth but also the regression of essences in heart.
Source of Inspiration
The inspiration for A LIFE ON THE LEFT Autumn and Winter 2015 Collection comes from the origin of life, water, which was colorless at the beginning, but with the development of human society, it started to become white, deep moss and even chek red. The appearance of red tide subverted people’s most primitive impression of water. By combining these kinds of colors and traditional handicrafts such as hand-knitted crafts, hand-crocheted crafts and hand-embroidered crafts and by giving brand new texture to the fabric, designers want to use this collection to tell us that sometimes, for us, changing is recreating. We attempt to search those lost memories, during which we will know what we have missed. To recreate is not just to add new elements for new life. It is a reconstruction as well as a return to our nature hearts.
The whole collection is filled with a seeker’s spirit, wandering and loneliness. Just as what has been said by the director Fellini, people walk in a maze of memories, dreams and feelings. In the maze, they would suddenly forget who they are, what kind of people they were in the past, and where to go in the future.
We have two mirrors. One shows things that are around the corner and the other pictures what has happened. Standing in the middle of the two mirrors, we could see the reflection in the mirror behind through the one in the front and review the past from the perspective of future. Those lost feelings, memories and objects would emerge in the front mirror all of a sudden. Meanwhile, turning back to see the future world in another mirror, we could think clearly.
Autumn and Winter collection Color & Craft
The main colors of the Autumn and Winter 2015 collection are white, seaweed, moss and chek red. As the colors of collections deepen gradually, it leaves a stronger visual impression on people. The transition from light to dark is just like the changing color of sea, from distinct to thick, in people’s memories.
The whole collection focuses on the materials that could give a sense of waving, coarseness and blending. Woolen and coarse cotton fabrics are the core selection of this season. The blending concept has been rebuilt in this autumn and winter. Though they are not made from a simple fabric, the pure sense of touch is restored. It is a breakthrough in the autumn and winter series. At the same time, the accession of the yarns customized and imported from Italy, including coral, sharp and papyrus yarns has brought up the dreamlike ecological and poetic living awareness again. Searching and collecting various fabrics, designers want to innovate new materials that could show the original state and to reveal the implication of cloth with careful tailoring.
In terms of the craft, the idea of red tide is displayed in the series through short fabric technology, leaving a different impression from the traditional one. After a special treatment, wool will become silky but the good heat retention could remain. Through recreation, we diversify the extrinsic factors but keep the intrinsic quality.
In addition, embroidery, one of the craft that has been insisted all the time by A LIFE ON THE LEFT, is a technique with a long history in China and it makes oriental women look feminine. Therefore, the complex of heavy embroidery becomes the most touching element of the series. The art reflects not only the external value, but also the precious combination of modern design and craftsmen. It provides those who work silently with opportunity to show their talent. This kind of oriental beauty of elegance consists of nearly 4000-centimeter yarns shuttled up and down over 10000 times by craftsmen. The three-dimensional texture is the expression of insistence.
Weaving, another important craft in this collection, looks ordinary but with the efforts of the designers and craftsmen, its presentation is no longer the same repetition of the old style. Designers are more concerned about discovering the fun of weaving, which produces a different design effect. For instance, the effect of none-joint can be achieved only by weaving. Around 200 silk strips are shuttled over and over by the craftsmen for over 20 hours then they are made into 2000 knots, which stands for a dream. Nobody knows that craftsmen have to spend about 22 hours in weaving more than 20000 times on a handwoven coat. When we saw mom weaving for us during childhood, we knew ignorantly that she was weaving deepest kinship and infinite expectation in it. Now, through the exploration and recreation of craftsmen, we are suddenly enlightened that not only emotion and expectation but also art and fashion can be woven.
In 2015, A LIFE ON THE LEFT is still on the journey of exploring the world. We insist on integrating a variety of traditional crafts into clothing production and show the world unique materials and techniques through exploration and recreation.
